Ansel Elgort, Dungeons & Dragons, please don’t screw this up!

How do you feel about Ansel Elgort in the new D&D movie… who IS he? Is there a reason this is a FAIL Squad Games article?
Here is the fella in question talking with Jimmy Fallon about Bruce Willis, his mom and some other banter. He does have a long list of movies and roles that he has been in, however, I have to admit to not seeing any of them.
IMBD here

Ansel Elgort
the Next D&D Hero??!?

One thing comes to mind when we see this actor and think of dungeons & Dragons, “Are they trying to make a cuter boy Legolas?”

Because, COME ON!!! Legolas had no business being in the hobbit, but the women production companies pander to in the theaters would never have stood for leaving him out. For that matter, Thorin had no business being…. whatever girl fantasy the company percieved hue should be either.

So are production companies just pandering to the teen-girl-crush in the movie to get asses in the seat instead of making the big budget epic Dungeons & Dragons movie we have waited SO long to see?

Dungeons And Dragons, to be directed by Rob Letterman, has been a top priority film for Warner Bros. which is looking for new franchises to invigorate the studio…. Which means they are taking a HUGE leap of faith after many years of just remaking old movies.

David Leslie Johnson (The Conjuring 2) scripted the fantasy story for the studio. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis, Sweetpea Entertainment’s Courtney Solomon and Allan Zeman, and Roy Lee are producing. So they have some traction on the production.

The big question is,”Are we getting an epic, or are we getting more crap?” Dungeons & Dragons movies have been attempted before, but they have been lousy budget productions with people who barely understand the game. I am SURE this will be a 5E movie, sorry old school fans, we will never get our true dream. This might come close though.

The hopeful and shiny side of this penny, is that Game of Thrones has experienced a hugs success among the nerds AND jocks (thank you boobs!). LOTR also created a large following, even if everything Hobbit related was a real disappointment.

Here at Fail Squad Games, we remain cautiously optimistic about this choice, and we keep watching the news with a glimmer of hope… daring to dream…. that us Dungeons & Dragons gamers MIGHT get our epic we have so-long dreamt about.

The Bogey of Brindle Launches, Funds & Thrives

Funded
The Bogey of Brindle launched yesterday, then within a few hours, was fully funded and the unique backing levels were disappearing fast. Backers have been sharing the link all over social media, and as a team, we are growing this project properly.

Like Curse of the White Mine, I felt an obligation to find stretch goals and other things, but also like the Curse of the White Mine, I wanted to Keep it simple so delivery wouldn’t get complicated.

A lot of work went into turning The Bogey of Swindle into a full size module and 5E from an OSRIC digest one-sitting mod. The adventure is completely fresh and barely recognizable. A number of new characters have been added, the boss re-imagined, and no stone left unturned, then many new ones added in for good measure.

When I brought Curse of the White Mine to conventions, a lot of people were telling me they missed the old fashion AD&D module feel. They weren’t keen on the full color page splashes and the fancy things I thought were “neat”. The gamers who did like the full color layout, could have gone either way really.
As an old-school guy who really enjoys the nostalgia, I get it, I really do. I wanted to bring that old school feel to this adventure, but produce a 5E quest for the Old School DMs who were playing 5E. All but a couple of illustrations were done by me in old fashion pen and ink on paper. Maps included.

This module is complete and ready to go to print. I hope you consider supporting the Old School feel in the Emperor’s new clothes (5E) and let the world know that OSR can also be alive in 5E.

A LOT of work has gone into this project, and nothing has been left untouched. This will be a full size module that is ready for multiple game sessions. WAY more than just a re-do of a short clumsy mod when we first started.

The Remake of Bogey of Swindle (Spoiler alert)

swindle Our heroes Lia (I had spelled it wrong previously) and Holg made it to Swindle. It suddenly became clear that they should have asked more questions back in Whisper when the tavern owner told them not everyone was exactly “human”. They assumed there would be no issue, because they themselves weren’t human (An elf and a half-orc). They did not expect Goblins!

They were greeted in the morning by the mayor of Swindle and his henchmen. An awkward first meeting to be sure. The Swindle Goblins are prepared for awkward first meetings and folks on their guard, but towering Holg was intimidating and the goblins were hesitant as well. Some quick conversation and offers of food (and booze) settled the meeting quickly.

Squizgar, a Blue Dragonborn druid had a rough scrape with some different nasty Goblins in some caves. She was recovering in the wilds the night before when she fled a mysterious forest fire in the distance and was offered some fast shelter from the goblins who were terrified of screeching beasts in their squash fields. Too wounded and exhausted to investigate the horrors of the fields, the goblins assured her she was safe, so she slept.

The next morning Squizgar met and joined Lia and Holg as the mystery of the creatures of the squash and pumpkin fields became more focused. The Goblins of Swindle were terrified of the haunts and demons that raided their fields, distillery, and their homes at night.

The heroes staked out the fields, not sure what to expect. The Bogey’s showed up with a dozen little demons and huge rats. The demons it turned out, were kobolds with haunting howls, but the Bogey’s…. the bogey’s remain a mystery. Lia was accidentally discovered as she attempted to creep near a Bogey. A battle erupted! Squizgar DID get near one Bogey in squirrel form, but she suspects something more mundane than an ethereal creature.

The battle with the Kobolds could have been horribly deadly. A Dozen of the nasty beasts charged at our three heroes weapons drawn. Holg leapt to the battle with his great axe, where Lia stopped him short, covered him in red berries and made him a fright.
Using his impressive intimidation he let out a roar and became his own terror in the night sending half the creatures fleeing in fright!

An entangle spell and a number of swings sent the cowards scrambling away. The Bogey’s were long gone though, they fled as soon as Lia was seen near the squash fields.

The night was saved, but the mystery remains. In the morning the heroes may be tracking Kobolds, but not before a rest. Hopefully they can find the least stinky of houses in Swindle.

They managed to wrangle one kobold to the caves bound in ropes. Now to convince the goblins that their terror is caused by something rather banal.

Fail Squad Adventures – pt1

The Bogey of Swindle Remake:

wildfireDuring the first round of Bogey of Swindle session aimed at a revamp, the party (Leah the Wood Elf Druid, Paired with Holg the Half-Orc Barbarian) were approached in Whisper at the tavern to undertake the journey to Swindle to see where the shipments of beer and liquor were.
They heard folk in Swindle weren’t exactly “human”, but not being human themselves, no questions were asked.
Down the trade route they went with the rpomise of reward from the tavern and local business owners.
That evening, camped on the road, it was decided they would enjoy a campfire. Leah spoke with a deer and discovered there were “Little orcs like him” about. Leah gathered mustard greens, chestnuts and acorns for a lovely meal, and Holg was just about to set off to shoot a deer, Leah hoped not her new friend.
Arrows shot into the campsite, striking Leah and Holg! Chaos erupted as Leah ran to get out of the fire light allowing her darkvision to kick in. Kobold Ambush!!! From he trees!
Leah threw a quick dagger, dropping one from the trees and confiscating his bow.
Holg did what a heroic Orc-warrior barbarian would….. He threw the flaming logs of the campfire into the fall foliage!!! He would burn those buggers out!
Much to the horror of Leah, the fire began to spread. She shot another Kobold out of the trees with her Kobold bow. Only one of the wretched things remained, who was lighting a rag in an oil flask to throw at the towering orc warrior standing in the road admiring his “clever” solution to the Kobold problem. Holg, unbelievably caught the vial then immediately threw it back at the creature. Where it exploded into a white hot fireball spreading the flames out of control!! The flaming Kobold, amazingly still alive and on fire, ran wild with panic through the dry fall leaves rolling and flailing in agony to his death (spreading the flames more).
Leah caught sight of her new doe friend fleeing, calling for her baby fawn, lost in the flames. With horror and weeping disbelief she did the only thing she could think of as flames roared to engulf the forest, pray. In the road she created an altar and prayer circle with herbs, followed carefully the druidic method of pleading for aid, and began a prayer for rain.
None came
The scars of the arrows healed quickly, but the memory of the horrific night remained. They traveled through the night, flames roaring in the distance as their fire engulfed the forest.
Holg, was quite sure his solution to the kobold problem was complete and thorough…. there was some in-fighting until dawn.

Ernest Gary Gygax Support

ernie Not everyone asks for assistance BEFORE it’s too late. Ernie the barbarian is about to go on a quest to take on the biggest foe he has ever had to tackle. In such times, heroes know they can’t make journeys like this alone, though theirs will be the name sung in songs of victory.

Ernie Gygax is the namesake, and son of Dungeons & Dragons creator Gary Gygax (Both Ernest Gary Gygax) and has contributed to the hobby we love and cherish in many great ways….. and I like to think he would call me his friend. The following showed  up on his Facebook page today:

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The Ernest Gary Gygax Jr Trust has just been created. The address for any who wish to assist with Pay Pal is [email protected] , I am in a fight for my long term life and am fighting a battle against one of the mightiest foes I’ve ever fought against. Poor health and then to complicate the issue alcoholism which compounds the issues. With the aid of Luke Gygax and some important input from Alex Kammer I wish to announce the change to the Trust that used to be the Fire Relief Fund, which not only helped pay for my existence after the fire but the Hospital stay after the Heart Attack a few years ago and many other health costs. Please share this call for gaming friends to come to my aid.

Medical issues aside, alcoholism is a mighty dragon to slay, and more-so when medical bills are looming and the aches and pains of other medical conditions remind you of the challenge.

Ernie is a resource and character in our Dungeons and Dragons Epic we don’t want to re-roll, and we don’t want him standing alone against the dragon. If you wish to help out you can contribute to the paypal fund by donating via friends and family to [email protected]

Our family here at FailSquadGames wish you all the best Ernie, and lend you our swords to come out on top of this battle.
